Boston hosts regional final for prestigious F1 in Schools event

The race was on in Boston for a place in the National Finals of F1 in Schools earlier this week, as the Peter Paine Performance Centre hosted the competition to crown a Regional Champion with schools from across the East Midlands.

16 teams competed for pole position from various schools and colleges across the East Midlands Region, including local representation from Boston Grammar School, Boston High School and University Academy Holbeach, with only two places available to reach the National Finals later this year.

The challenge, which sees teams from each school work together to create their own modified miniature cars to compete in a drag race, was kindly hosted by Boston College with support from South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership.

The Partnership has worked closely with F1 in Schools to arrange the event and bring other similar opportunities to local schools, as part of an effort to help engage young people in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and to inspire more people to pursue careers in engineering and technology.

The entries were scored across a wide variety of categories, including fastest car and best engineered car, with the winners chosen by an expert judging panel including Mike Pilbeam, Managing Director of the renowned Pilbeam Racing Designs.

After a full day of designing, engineering and racing the Regional Championship was awarded to Northampton College and their team Ignitenc, who will join Bedford Modern School represented by Red Eagle Racing in the National Finals.

Liz King, Investment and Skills Officer for the Partnership, said: "It was fantastic to see schools from all over the region attend the East Midlands Final and put their amazing skills to the test against each other.

"The event was a great success, and it was brilliant to watch the passion on display from the students taking part, many of whom we hope will see this as the first steps towards pursuing a career in engineering and technology.

"Thank you everyone who took part and helped to organise the event, we are delighted to be able to work together to bring innovative and exciting opportunities like this into the sub-region and give local students this special experience."
